The Neuffener Heide is a nature reserve on the mark of the city of Neuffen in the Esslingen district .

history

The heather used to be forested, it was cleared for use as an Egart and pasture and kept open. In the past the grazed areas reached almost up to the Hohenneuffen . If you leave the area to itself, the forest returns and the biologically and scenically valuable heather loses its character. The forerunners of the forest are shrubs, especially the black thorn . With its ability to spread, it is far superior to all other plants on the heather and displaces the orchids and gentians that need light.

The regional council of Stuttgart therefore placed the area of the “Neuffener Heide” under nature protection on September 22, 1978 (law gazette of October 31, 1978, p. 571) (protected area no. 1068). It has a size of 16.87 ha. The Neuffener Heide belongs to the Middle Alb foreland and the Middle Kuppenalb natural area . The protection purpose is the preservation of a landscape-defining heather in the slope area of the Hohenneuffen with a typical plant and animal community and the occurrence of rare protected plant species in the semi-arid grassland .

Information boards have been showing the heathland, its origins and history since 2007. In addition, information is provided about the diverse flora and fauna with their orchids.

Care through mowing and grazing

The Teck-Neuffen-Gau of the Swabian Alb Association committed itself to the regional council of Stuttgart to take over the necessary maintenance work, the monitoring and the securing of sufficient grazing of the nature reserve. When mowing and clearing the crop, the soil loses nutrients and becomes lean. But the hoped-for emaciation of the soil did not bring the desired success, because the annual input of 40 kg nitrogen per hectare from the air is considerable. The orchids' competitors in particular benefit from this nitrogen input through increased growth. Regular mowing reduces the risk.

A shepherd lets his flock slowly move across the heather three times a year, in mid-June, late July and late August. Despite grazing, the growth of trees on the heath cannot be prevented. The former task of the shepherd to keep the heather as free as possible from blackthorn and wild roses has now been taken over by the Swabian Alb Association.
