The Erlachsee lies on the state road L 1204 between Denkendorf and Neuhausen auf den Fildern in the Esslingen district . It is one of the few still waters on the arid Filder Plain . The old people from Denkendorf simply call it “Dor Sae” (“the lake”) in their usage, because there is no other in the vicinity. The lake is fed by a spring about fifty meters to the south. The outflow is via the Erlachgraben to the east, then through the former monastery district to the Körsch . Its layout goes back to the monks of the Denkendorf Monastery , who raised carp in the pond for Lent. The monks used the existing damp depression and closed it with a dam.

Since its creation in 1129, the Erlachsee has developed into a small natural oasis. In 1989 it was designated as a nature reserve in order to preserve the lake with its open water surface, the reed and silting zones and the wood on the banks with natural break forest in the north-western depression as well as the species-rich fauna and flora. Even in the early days of official nature conservation, the area was designated as a protected landscape component on October 18, 1937. By ordinance of December 15, 1975, an area of 15.5 hectares was then designated as a landscape protection area under the name “Erlachsee”. With the designation of the nature reserve, the nature reserve was reduced accordingly in 1989.

Today a footpath leads along the part of the lake. The other part is cordoned off and entry is prohibited.

The NSG also belongs to the FFH area 7321-341 Filder .
