The Nägelestal is a nature reserve (NSG number 1,191) designated by ordinance of the Stuttgart regional council of December 16, 1992 in the area of the city of Kirchheim unter Teck in the Esslingen district in Baden-Württemberg .
The 20.0 hectare (ha) nature reserve lies between 320 m and 335 m above sea level directly on the outskirts west of the city of Kirchheim and belongs to the natural area of the Middle Alb foreland . The name “Nägelestal” goes back to the Nägele brickworks that used to be located there . The former excavation pit of this brick factory is in the area. The clay mining and the subsequent partial backfilling resulted in a hilly area with numerous embankments. The hollows and trenches were filled with water after the brickyard was closed.
It is an area characterized by various uses. Wasteland and fallow land, streams, damp depressions and still waters, ravines and orchards alternate. The spectrum ranges from a few intensively used arable land to traditionally cultivated orchards to large areas of wasteland outside of regular cultivation. As a result, there is a pronounced structure of overall high ecological importance. The area is looked after by the Naturschutzbund Deutschland (NABU).
