Location and purpose of protection
The 5.5 hectare (ha) nature reserve is located on the south-eastern outskirts at an altitude of 310 to 320 meters above sea level and belongs to the natural spatial unit of the " Schlierbacher Platte " in the Middle Alb foreland. It is a secondary biotope in an advanced stage of succession with dry and wet areas, steep slopes and bodies of water. The former clay pit is an ecologically valuable compensation area in the local area.
The area provides habitat for numerous particularly endangered animals, especially for amphibians, birds and insects that are endangered nationwide. In addition to the water frog, common frog, common toad and pond newt, the yellow-bellied toad find protection here . Rare birds such as goldhammer , green and chaffinch, girlitz , garden and blackcap, dunnock , wren, willow warbler , wagtail and chiffchaff can also be found. The aquatic insect fauna is particularly pronounced, including water scorpions , back and bottom swimmers, water cock beetles and larvae of several dragonfly species.
The area has been maintained and looked after by the Swabian Alb Association , local group Wernau, since 1986 .
