Location and purpose of protection
The 7.1 hectare (ha) nature reserve is part of the Middle Alb foreland and is located on a steep right-hand slope of the Neckar between 305 m and 325 m above sea level south of the municipality of Neckartenzlingen. The NSG is completely enclosed by the landscape protection area No. 1.16.054 Neckar, Erms and Autmuttal in the administrative area of Neckartenzlingen .
Large parts of the slope have been grazed for centuries, even today the slope bears a sheep pasture partially interspersed with bushes and juniper ( Juniperus communis ), which mainly consists of the silver thistle grass lawn ( Carlino-Kosleristum ). A floristic specialty of Schönrain is the most important occurrence in Baden-Württemberg of the endangered autumn screw stendel or autumn rootwort ( Spiranthes spiralis ). In addition, the stock of wood-free grasslands with a large, naturally existing variety of sites should be preserved and promoted . The slope is now intensively grazed with goats and sheep and is also maintained and looked after annually by the Swabian Alb Association .
