Location and purpose of protection

The 7.1 hectare (ha) nature reserve is part of the Middle Alb foreland and is located on a steep right-hand slope of the Neckar between 305 m and 325 m above sea level south of the municipality of Neckartenzlingen. The NSG is completely enclosed by the landscape protection area No. 1.16.054 Neckar, Erms and Autmuttal in the administrative area of ​​Neckartenzlingen .

Large parts of the slope have been grazed for centuries, even today the slope bears a sheep pasture partially interspersed with bushes and juniper ( Juniperus communis ), which mainly consists of the silver thistle grass lawn ( Carlino-Kosleristum ). A floristic specialty of Schönrain is the most important occurrence in Baden-Württemberg of the endangered autumn screw stendel or autumn rootwort ( Spiranthes spiralis ). In addition, the stock of wood-free grasslands with a large, naturally existing variety of sites should be preserved and promoted . The slope is now intensively grazed with goats and sheep and is also maintained and looked after annually by the Swabian Alb Association .
