description

Beaucarnea stricta grows like a tree with irregular branches and reaches heights of up to 10 meters. It forms a strongly thickened caudex. The stiff, warty, linear, bluish, finely toothed leaves on the leaf margins are 55 to 80 cm long and 8 to 15 mm wide.

The panicle, egg-shaped inflorescence becomes 60 to 80 cm high with 20 to 30 cm wide, irregularly arranged branches. The flowers are cream-colored.

The elliptical capsule fruits are 8 to 10 mm long and up to 12 mm wide and contain a seed. The irregularly triangular seeds have a diameter of up to 4.5 mm.

Systematics and distribution

Beaucarnea stricta is distributed in the Mexican states of Puebla and Oaxaca in xerophyte regions in deciduous forests. It is associated with Dasylirion lucidum and various species of cacti.

The first description of Beaucarnea stricta was in 1861 by Charles Lemaire in L'Illustration horticole , Volume 8, 1861, p. 61. Some of the numerous synonyms of Beaucarnea stricta Lem. are Beaucarnea recurvata var. stricta (. Lem) Baker (1880) and Beaucarnea purpusii Rose (1906).

Beaucarnea stricta belongs to the section Papillatea in the genus Beaucarnea . The species in this section grow in tropical dry forests . The irregularly branched trees with the caudex thickened at the base are characteristic. The stiff, bluish to green leaves with the finely toothed leaf margins are typical. In contrast, Beaucarnea recurvata forms variable, falling, twisted leaves, which are also larger in overall appearance.
