Dasylirion lucidum is a species of Dasylirion in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). The specific epithet lucidum means '(Latin lucidus) very shiny, bright'. An English common name is "Sotol di Rose".

description

Dasylirion lucidum forms a trunk 150 cm high. It sometimes forms rosettes at the top. The variable, smooth, green to yellow, dense leaves are 40 to 80 cm long and 10 to 15 mm wide. The irregularly arranged radial spines are directed upwards. The tips are bushy / fibrous 5 to 6 cm long and spread out irregularly.

The panicley, woody, narrow inflorescence becomes 2 to 3 m high. The numerous flowers are white. The flowering period extends from May to June.

The egg-shaped capsule fruits contain a seed and are 7 mm long and 5 mm wide. The triangular seeds are 3 mm long and 2.2 mm wide.

Distribution and systematics

Dasylirion lucidum is distributed in southeast Mexico in the states of Puebla and in northern Oaxaca at altitudes of 1600 to 2300 m. It grows in arid regions on stony slopes and in bushy woodland, associated with Yucca mixtecana , Nolina longifolia , Agave salmiana , Beaucarnea purpusii , Beaucarnea gracilis and various Opuntia species.

The first description was in 1906 by Joseph Nelson Rose .

The rare Dasylirion lucidum is a member of the Dasylirion section . The robust, short, strong trunks are characteristic. The smooth, green to yellow leaves are typical. It resembles the nearby Dasylirion acrotrichum , but is generally located in somewhat lower regions. Intermediate forms with Dasylirion acrotrichum , which grows in northern Puebla, are known, but differences in the flower and leaf structure can be recognized.
