Fritz Hochstätter (born July 10, 1944 in Barr ) is a German botanist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Hochstätter ".

Live and act

Fritz Hochstätter was born in Alsace in 1944 , where his Mannheim parents Friedrich Hochstätter and Gertrud Hermine Hochstätter were brought to by the chaos of war. His father was employed by the tram in Mannheim, his mother was a housewife. He still has three sisters.

After studying business administration , he began to be particularly interested in hardy cacti and other succulents in the 1970s, stimulated by visits to the Copenhagen Botanical Garden and the Dane Georg Sydow's outdoor facility .

In April 1979 he traveled to California for the first time and researched some cactus and succulent species in their natural habitats. Since then, his life has been shaped by annual, sometimes multiple, visits to the United States , Canada and Mexico . For example, to date (2008) he has undertaken twelve expeditions that led him on foot to the Inner Grand Canyon to study the cactus species that are difficult to access. About his "field work" Hochstätter published numerous articles in relevant international journals such as Aztecia , Cactus and Succulent Journal , Kakteen und other Succulents , Kaktusblüte , Kaktusy , Piante Grasse and Succulenta .

Hochstätter has been a member of the International Organization for Succulent Research (IOS) since 1990 . In 1998 he founded the International Research Team (IRT) with other botanists from the United States and Europe . This organization is dedicated to the research and protection of the genera Pediocactus , Sclerocactus , Navajoa , Toumeya and Yucca . One of the first successes of the IRT in 2002 was the inclusion of Sclerocactus nyensis in Appendix I of the Washington Convention for the Protection of Endangered Species.

Fritz Hochstätter wrote the first descriptions of the cactus species Sclerocactus wetlandicus , Sclerocactus nyensis , Pediocactus nigrispinus and Yucca nana, as well as numerous other contributions to the systematics of cacti.

At the end of the 1980s he began to write specialist books on his research topic. Since 1998 he has been co-editor of the biannual, bilingual (German and English) magazine Cactaceae-Review .

In his collection in Mannheim, which he has been running since 1972, he cultivates numerous cacti and succulents that are threatened with extinction in their home locations.

Fritz Hochstätter is married to Ilse Hochstätter and has a daughter Indra.
