The nature reserve Horstbend-Mausbachquelle has been a protected area in the Aachen city region since 1992 . With its 4.2 hectares it is one of the smallest of the 37 currently existing nature reserves belonging to the city of Stolberg (Rhld.) .

location

The nature reserve, which consists of one area, is located in the southeast of Stolberg in the immediate vicinity of the town of Mausbach , with one side of the area bordering the nearby forest edge. It is interesting that the Mausbach is drained underground immediately after leaving the nature reserve and the water only reaches the surface again after it has been discharged into the Vichtbach . Efforts by the residents to achieve an above-ground water flow beyond the nature reserve have failed for financial reasons.

flora

The nature reserve gets its special importance for the flora from the existing source of the Mausbach. This creates a wetland with the typical spring, swamp, wet, humid and grassland vegetation. The plant landscape found here is sometimes extremely rare and strictly linked to the location. The preservation of this biotope presupposes a generous extensification while basically maintaining the use by grazing. The source area in the adjacent forest was included in order to prevent interference with the water balance.

fauna

Like the flora, the fauna of the nature reserve is also shaped by the wetland created by the Mausbach spring. A large number of dragonflies, sometimes rare, as well as newts and other amphibians can be found on the nature reserve .
