Sclerocactus nyensis is a species of the genus Sclerocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The name nyensis refers to Nye County in Nevada, the main distribution area of this species. English common names are "Nye Fishhook Cactus" and "Highland Desert Cactus".
description
The spherical Sclerocactus nyensis reaches heights of growth of 5 to 12 cm long and 3 to 10 cm in diameter. The tubular, pink to purple-colored flowers are up to 3.5 cm long and 3 cm in diameter. The flowering period begins in May.
In some locations, populations of Sclerocactus polyancistrus overlap with Sclerocactus nyensis . The different flowering times likely prevent hybridization . Sclerocactus nyensis is a member of the Sclerocactus section . The species is hardy to minus 20 ° C when dry . The real root cultivation in Europe is difficult. However, grafting on frost-hardy substrates such as Echinocereus species or Opuntia species is successful. For the glass house z. B. Eriocereus jusbertii to be recommended. However, the grafted plants lose their natural appearance.

Sclerocactus nyensis is distributed in the " Great Basin Desert" in Nevada on flat hills at altitudes between 1550 and 1800 meters. This species is often associated with Sclerocactus polyancistrus , Escobaria vivipara var. Desertii , Micropuntia species and Yucca brevifolia .
Systematics
The first description by Fritz Hochstätter under the name Sclerocactus nyensis was published in 1992. The species Sclerocactus nyensis is placed within the genus Sclerocactus in the section Sclerocactus .
Synonyms are Sclerocactus spinosior subsp. nyensis Lüthy (2007, nom. inval. ICBN -Article 33.4) and Sclerocactus spinosior subsp. nyensis Lüthy (2008).
Danger
Sclerocactus nyensis was included in Appendix I of the Washington Convention for the Protection of Endangered Species at the 12th Meeting of the Cites Conference of the Parties in Santiago de Chile at the request of Hochstätters . In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
