Pediocactus nigrispinus is a species of the genus Pediocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet d refers to the black thorns. English common names are "Columbia Plateau Cactus" and "Black Spines Cactus". The species, including its subspecies , is critically endangered.
description
The green, gray to bluish individual, sometimes group-forming, plant body is spherical, becomes ovoid in the adult stage and reaches heights of 5 to 30 cm with diameters of 5 to 15 cm. It is densely enveloped by the 6 to 12 brown to reddish, almost black, 15 to 35 mm long and strong, upright to slightly curved central spines .
The funnel-shaped flowers that appear above the areoles around the apex are 1 to 3.5 cm long and reach a diameter of up to 4.5 cm. The bracts are pink, rarely white or yellow. The flowering period is April to May.
The spherical to oval, fleshy green fruits are 1.3 cm long and 5 mm in diameter. They contain 10 to 40 dull, gray to almost black seeds that mature within 4 weeks.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Pediocactus nigrispinus grows mostly near rivers on the Columbia Plateau in Oregon , Washington and Idaho in arid regions, steppes and semi-deserts on hills or ledges at altitudes between 260 and 1200 meters. The species is associated with Opuntia polyacantha and Opuntia fragilis . In the summer of 2007, wildfires destroyed a population in northern Idaho.
It was described as an independent species in 1992 by Fritz Hochstätter .

- Pediocactus nigrispinus subsp. beastonii ( Hochstätter ) Hochstätter
- Pediocactus nigrispinus subsp. indranus (Hochstätter) Hochstätter
Pediocactus nigrispinus belongs to the Pediocactus section within the genus Pediocactus .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
