The Salmon River ([ ˈsæmən ˈɹɪvɚ ], literally " Salmon River ") is a river that flows 684 km through central Idaho .
It is also known as the “river of no return” because, until the invention of modern boat propulsion systems, it could only be navigated downstream. The Frank Church – River of No Return Wilderness reserve , which protects part of the river, also refers to this name .
River course
The Salmon River has its headwaters in the Sawtooth Mountains and in the Lemhi Range . It flows northeast through Custer County , further north through Lemhi County and then west through Idaho County to its confluence with the Snake River (Oregon border). From the source to the mouth, the river has a height difference of more than 2500 meters.
history
Gold was found along the river around 1860. The result was that many prospectors came to this area and there were clashes with the local Nez Percé Indians. Today you can still see many abandoned mines along the river.
leisure
The middle section of the Salmon River is considered one of the most beautiful areas for white water kayaking and rafting .
ecology
200 river kilometers between the confluence of the North Fork and Long Tom Bar have been designated a National Wild and Scenic River since 1980 .
The river is the habitat for numerous fish species. These include cutthroat trout , bull trout , rainbow trout , Prosopium williamsoni , sockeye salmon , king salmon (spring, summer and autumn), steelhead trout , black bass , fish of the genus Ptychocheilus , sucker carp and sturgeon .

The North Fork Salmon River rises on the Montana border . It flows south for a distance of 38 km before flowing into the Salmon River. At the point of confluence, the Salmon River changes its initial direction of flow from north to west. The US Highway 93 follows the course of the North Fork of Lost Trail Pass .
The Middle Fork Salmon River is a 166 km long left tributary of the Salmon River. It is also recognized as a National Wild and Scenic River . With the exception of 1 mile near the Dagger Falls-Boundary Creek Road , the entire stretch of the river is wild.
The South Fork Salmon River is also a left tributary that meets at the lower reaches of the Salmon River.
