Nez Perce County is a county in the state of Idaho in the United States . The county seat is Lewiston .

The county is located in northwest Idaho, borders both Oregon and Washington to the west, and covers an area of ​​2,218 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Latah County , Clearwater County , Lewis County, and Idaho Counties .

history

Nez Perce County was formed on February 4, 1864 as one of the four original counties. It was named after the Nez Percé Indian tribe , in whose traditional settlement area it is located. The first whites to set foot in this area were Lewis and Clark in 1805 . The current county boundaries have not changed since 1911.

According to the 2000 census , Nez Perce County had 37,410 people in 15,286 households and 10,149 families. The population density was 17 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 91.58 percent white, 0.28 percent African American, 5.31 percent Native American, 0.65 percent Asian, 0.07 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.50 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.60 percent were descended from two or more races.
