Lewiston is a city in the northwest of the US state Idaho and the administrative seat of Nez Perce County .

geography

The city is located on the border with Washington State , and is framed by the Snake River and Clearwater River . Lewiston is Idaho's only port accessible by seagoing ships. This means that the port is also the most inland port in the western United States that can be reached by smaller seagoing ships from the Pacific. There is a company that has produced jetboats for many films, such as James Bond films .

history

The first Europeans to reach the Lewiston area in October 1805 were members of the Lewis and Clark Expedition . At that time, Indians of the Nez Percé tribe inhabited the area. In 1861 the place Lewiston was founded as a result of a gold rush and named after Meriwether Lewis , one of the two expedition leaders at the time. The first newspaper appeared in the city in 1862. In 1863 Lewiston became the capital of the newly created Idaho Territory , the forerunner of what is now Idaho. However, as early as 1865, just two years later, the current capital of Idaho, Boise, was declared the capital of the Idaho Territory.
