Madison County is a county in the state of Idaho in the United States . The county seat is Rexburg .

geography

The county is located almost in the far east of Idaho, about 25 km from Wyoming and has an area of ​​1226 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Fremont County , Teton County , Bonneville County, and Jefferson County . The county is predominantly characterized by the foothills of the Yellowstone Plateau on the north bank of the Snake River . To the west it drains into the Snake River Plain .

history

Madison County was formed on February 19, 1913 from parts of Fremont County. It was named after the US President James Madison .

According to the 2000 census , Madison County had 27,467 people in 7,129 households and 4,854 families. The population density was 22 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.50 percent white, 0.24 percent African American, 0.33 percent Native American, 0.57 percent Asian, 0.18 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 2.23 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.95 percent were descended from two or more races. The median household income was 32,607 USD , and the median income for a family 40,880 USD. Males had a median income of $ 29,299 versus $ 18,628 for females. The per capita income was $ 10,956. 10.1 percent of families and 30.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
