Shoshone County is a county in the state of Idaho in the United States . The county seat is Wallace .

The county is located in northwest Idaho, borders Montana to the northeast and has an area of 6,826 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Bonner County , Kootenai County , Benewah County , Latah County, and Clearwater County .
history
Shoshone County was formed as the original county on February 4, 1864. It was named after the Indian tribe of the Shoshone .

According to the 2000 census , Shoshone County had 13,771 people in 5,906 households and 3,856 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.84 percent white, 0.11 percent African American, 1.52 percent Native American, 0.23 percent Asian, 0.07 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.49 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.74 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.93 percent of the population.
Of the 5,906 households, 26.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.7 percent of them were married couples living together. 8.1 percent were single mothers and 34.7 percent were non-families. 29.4 percent were single households and 13.6 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.82 people.
22.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 6.7 percent between 18 and 24 years old, 25.5 percent between 25 and 44 years, 27.4 percent between 45 and 64 years. 17.4 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 99.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 97.0 men.
The median household income was 28,535 USD , and the median income for a family 35,694 USD. Males had a median income of $ 30,439 versus $ 18,831 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,934. 12.4 percent of families and 16.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
