Avery is a small unincorporated community in St. Joe River Valley in the US state of Idaho belonging Shoshone County . In 2010 only 68 permanent residents lived here, compared to 126 in 2000. The population increases in the summer, however, as US Forest Service employees and summer home owners join in at that time of year .

From 1909 to 1980 the village, located at 757 meters above sea level, was the station of the "Pacific Extension" of Milwaukee Road and from 1917 to 1974 it was the western point of the 3,000 volt direct current section from and to Harlowton in Montana . The route left the valley of the St. Joe River here and headed north over the Northern Bitterroot Range to the St. Paul Tunnel, which also formed the state border with Montana. The place was almost destroyed during the great fire of 1910. Since the train station served as an evacuation point, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The single-storey wooden building is now used as a community center.

Avery is important as a resort. Activities available include camping, hunting, quad and snowmobiling , hiking, horse riding, mountain biking, fishing and white water rafting. The main attraction is the fish pond where rainbow trout live.
