Saint Joe River in the Spokane River basin |
The Saint Joe River (also St. Joe River ) is a 225 km long tributary of the Coeur d'Alene Lake in the Idaho Panhandle in the northwest of the US state Idaho .
The Saint Joe River has its origin in the Northern Bitterroot Range in the 1974 m high small mountain lake Saint Joe Lake west of the summit of the 2339 m high Illinois Peak . From there it flows in a westerly direction through the two counties of Shoshone and Benewah . The towns of Avery and Calder are on the middle reaches. At Avery, the North Fork Saint Joe River flows into the river from the north. The Saint Joe River later passes the small town of St. Maries , where the Saint Maries River flows into it when coming from the south. Eventually the Saint Joe River reaches Coeur d'Alene Lake. This is an originally glacial lake, which is dammed up at its outlet by a dam. When the water level is high, part of the lower reaches of the Saint Joe River is flooded. Heyburn State Park extends on the south bank of this river or lake section . The Saint Joe River drains an area of 4791 km². The mean discharge near the mouth is 88 m³ / s.
Come in the river a. Cutthroat trout and bull trout .
The upper reaches of the Saint Joe River is protected as a National Wild and Scenic River . A 43 km long stretch of river from Saint Joe Lake to above the Red Ives Ranger Station belongs to the wild category . The subsequent 64 kilometers of the river to the confluence of the North Fork at Avery, on which a road runs along the river, belong to the recreational category .
The river owes its name to the Catholic priest Pierre-Jean De Smet , who founded a mission on the riverbank in the 19th century and gave the river the original name of St. Joseph .
