Long Lake Dam on the Spokane River |
The Spokane River is a left tributary of the Columbia River , approximately 180 km long, in northern Idaho and eastern Washington in the United States . It drains a medium-high mountain region east of the Columbia River and flows through the city of Spokane .
River course
The Spokane River forms the outlet of Coeur d'Alene Lake at its northern end in the Idaho Panhandle and reaches Franklin D. Roosevelt Lake after a flow distance of about 180 km .
Below Coeur d'Alene Lake, the river crosses the Rathdrum Prairie . He reaches Post Falls where he passes a dam and a 13 m high waterfall. It continues to flow in a westerly direction. There are five other dams along the river, four of them within the City of Spokane . In the center of Spokane he overcomes the Spokane Falls . He then takes on the tributaries of Hangman Creek (or Latah Creek ) and Little Spokane River . Further downstream, the Spokane River is dammed into Long Lake , a 24 km long reservoir. East of Miles it finally flows into Franklin D. Roosevelt Lake. Historic Fort Spokane is located at the confluence with the Columbia River.
pollution
The Spokane River is heavily polluted with heavy metals, which come from the Bunker Hill Mine and Smelting Complex and enter the river via the Coeur d'Alene River and Coeur d'Alene Lake.
Spokane's sewage treatment plants divert their water into the Spokane River.
