The Hangman Creek , alternative unofficial name Latah Creek , is an approximately 100 km long left tributary of the Spokane River in northwest Idaho and in the east of the US state Washington . The river name refers to the place where the Yakama chief Qualchan was hanged in 1858 by men under Colonel George Wright . A renaming of the river in "Latah Creek" was rejected in 1999 by the US Board on Geographic Names (USBGN).

River course

Hangman Creek has its source in the Hoodoo Mountains in northwest Idaho at an altitude of about 1,000  m . It flows in a predominantly northwestern direction through the extreme northeast of the Columbia Plateau . After 30 km he crosses the border to Washington. He passes the village of Tekoa . The Hangman Creek finally flows into the Spokane River on the western edge of the city of Spokane .
