Kellogg is a city in Shoshone County and is located in the state of Idaho in the United States .
geography
The city is located on the southern edge of the Coeur d'Alene National Forest , 50 kilometers east of Coeur d'Alene and approximately 100 kilometers east of Spokane and right on the Interstate 90 highway.
history
The name of the town goes back to the prospector Noah Kellogg , who explored the area with his donkey in 1885 . According to legend, he found the runaway animal one morning in a place where galena shimmered. Several mines were opened there and the place was named "Kellogg" after its discoverer. A sign that says Kellogg. The Town which was Discovered by a JACKASS - and which is inhabited by his Descendants. , freely translated: “Kellogg. This city was discovered by a donkey ( Jackass also means idiot or complete idiot) and is inhabited by his descendants ”, humorously recalls the founding of the city. Noah Kellogg is buried in the Kellogg cemetery. During the heyday, several mines were in operation, mainly extracting silver . In May 1972 one of the most serious mining accidents in the United States occurred in the Sunshine Mine , in which 91 miners died of carbon monoxide poisoning. Eight days after the accident, two workers were recovered alive. In 1981, the Bunker Hill Mining Company and its smelting works closed, causing thousands of workers to lose their jobs. Other nearby mines also reduced their capacities. The Sunshine Mine, however, was still in operation until 2001. The subsequent owner (Sterling Mining) went into bankruptcy ( Chapter 11 ). If projects of a takeover company can be realized, new geological explorations are planned for the future.
The city has recently shifted its focus to tourist facilities and is now a popular winter sports area and starting point for a one-cabin gondola lift to the Silver Mountain Resort with Kellogg Peak (1920 meters above sea level) and Wardner Peak (1890 meters above sea level) .
