Pediocactus nigrispinus subsp. indranus is a subspecies of the plant species Pediocactus nigrispinus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). English common names are "Indras Cactus", "Salmon National Forest Cactus" and "Salmon River Cactus".

description

Pediocactus nigrispinus subsp. indranus grows individually pressed spherically, sometimes in groups up to 60 cm in diameter. It has a length and a diameter of 4 to 10 cm. The dark pink funnel-shaped flowers have a length and a diameter of 1 to 2 cm. The snowy, cold, almost uninhabited areas in central Idaho on the Salmon River seem to offer the subspecies ideal conditions. The distribution area is limited, but small colonies are scattered. The flowering time is in May.

He is in dry state at up to minus 20 ° C hardy . True-root cultivation is difficult in Europe. The typical subspecies is rarely found in the collections.

Systematics and distribution

Pediocactus nigrispinus subsp. indranus grows endemically in the Salmon National Forest in Idaho on south-facing slopes in different soils (lava, clay) in tall grass at altitudes of 1100 to 1380 meters and is there associated with the Opuntia polyacantha and Lewisia rediviva .

The name of the subspecies refers to Indra Hochstätter, the daughter of the first descriptor. The description as Pediocactus nigrispinus subsp. indranus took place in 2003 by Fritz Hochstätter. A synonym is Pediocactus simpsonii subsp. indranus (Hochstätter) Hochstätter (1995).
