International Organization for Succulent Research

The International Organization for Succulent Plant Study ( IOS ) aims to promote the research and conservation of succulent and related plants. Its members include botanists, succulent lovers, and scientific institutions and associations from around the world. The IOS is a member of the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS).

Founding history

In 1947, Hans Krainz was concerned with the idea of ​​uniting the existing national cactus organizations (e.g. the German Cactus Society , the Society of Austrian Cactus Friends and the Swiss Cactus Society ) under one umbrella organization, the European Cactus Society , while at the same time maintaining their independence. However, a first appeal sent by him at the end of 1947 found no response so shortly after the end of the Second World War .

By the Board of Trustees of the Scientific Fund of the Swiss Cactus Society was founded in early 1950 one of Hans Krainz, Franz Buxbaum and H. Michael Roan sent signed letters to about 50 well-known Sukkulentenforscher and other botanists that the International 1st Congress of Sukkulentenforscher for 27 September 1950. The participants in this congress agreed in just a few days on a statute, on the basis of which the IOS was founded on September 30, 1950. The Zurich Succulent Collection was chosen as the location of the first conservation collection for succulents .

organization

The IOS is governed by a board of directors consisting of the president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, assistant to the secretary and editor. The election of the board of directors takes place every two years on the occasion of the main congress. Héctor M. Hernández Macíask has been President of the IOS since 2012 .

There are separate working groups for four plant families - Aizoaceae , Apocynaceae , Asphodelaceae and Cactaceae .

Awards

The Cactus d'Or (gold cactus ) is awarded every two years at the main IOS congress.
