Life
Initially professor of literature in Paris, he discovered his passion for botany in 1835 and published the magazines Jardin Fleuriste and L'Horticulteur universel . As a specialist in cacti and succulents, he wrote many books on these subjects. He named numerous species, for example the Schlumbergera . From 1845 he worked in Belgium, initially for the botanical journal Flore des serres et des jardins de l'Europe founded by Louis van Houtte , and later for the L'illustration horticole published by Alexander Verschaffelt . His endeavor was to improve the illustration of plants and to complete the monograph of the Cactaceae family .
Taxa named after Lemaire
The plant genus Lemaireocereus Britton & Rose from the cactus family (Cactaceae) has been named in his honor. However, this genre is being dissolved today; the representatives of the former genus have been added to other genera such as Pachycereus , Heliabravoa , Machaerocereus , Polaskia and Stenocereus . Also the genus name Neolemaireocereus Backeb. from the cactus family honors Lemaire.
The Australian genus Maireana, on the other hand, from the subfamily of the goosefoot family ( Chenopodioideae ) within the family of the foxtail family (Amaranthaceae) is not named in his honor, but honors a plant collector Maire of the 19th century.
