Stenocereus is a genus of plants inthe cactus family (Cactaceae). The botanical name is derived from the Greek adjective "στενός" (stenos) for narrow, narrow and refers to the relatively narrow ribs of the plants.

The species of the genus Stenocereus grow tree-like or shrubby, are sometimes elongated or crawling and form thickets or sometimes have well-formed trunks. The green, strong shoots are cylindrical and have numerous ribs with clearly defined, woolly areoles from which strong thorns arise. Warts may be present or absent.

The funnel-shaped or bell-shaped flowers usually open at night. Your pericarpel is covered with numerous, usually thorny, areoles.

Thorns sit on the spherical to egg-shaped, more or less fleshy fruits . They are up to three inches long and tear irregularly. The remnants of the flowers are persistent and in most species only fall off shortly before maturity. The fruits contain large, bright black and usually smooth seeds .

Systematics and distribution

Stenocereus is found in the arid regions of the southwestern United States , Mexico , Central America , the Caribbean , Venezuela, and Colombia .

Alwin Berger established Stenocereus in 1905 as a subgenus of Cereus ( Cereus subg. Stenocereus ). Vincenzo Riccobono then raised the sub-genus to the rank of a genus in 1909. The type species of the genus is Cereus stellatus .

Paul V. Heath pointed out in 1992 that the generic name Rathbunia, also published by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose in 1909, had priority over the generic name Stenocereus , since it was published earlier. Since the genus name Stenocereus was much better known in the botanical and horticultural literature, however, Nigel Paul Taylor and Arthur Charles Gibson submitted the proposal in 1994 to keep the genus name Stenocereus and reject the genus name Rathbunia . This proposal was confirmed at the International Botanical Congress in St. Louis in 1999 and was incorporated into the revision of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature published in 2000 .
