Nigel Paul Taylor

Nigel Paul Taylor (* 1956 ) is a British botanist . His main area of ​​work is the taxonomy of the cactus family . He was the curator of the Royal Botanic Gardens (Kew) and is the director of the Singapore Botanic Gardens . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " NPTaylor ".

Life

Nigel Taylor joined the Herbarium of Kew Gardens in 1977 after graduating from Reading University as a Bachelor of Science , where he specialized in the taxonomy of cacti and their protection. As a modern plant hunter, he undertook numerous research trips to Central and South America . In 2000 he received his doctorate (Ph.D.) from the Open University.

As a curator of Kew Gardens, he was responsible, in addition to his scientific work, for the work of more than 200 employees who are responsible for looking after the plant population in the show houses and the collections in the nurseries. In addition, the supervision of horticultural training and its facilities was one of his tasks. He serves on the Plant Sciences Advisory Board of the University of Reading, trustee of Castle Howard Arboretum , served on the editorial board of Kew Bulletin from 1996 to 2005 and Curtis's Botanical Magazine from 1995 to 2005. He advises the editors of the British Broadcasting Corporation's gardening magazines .

From 1984 to 1988 Nigel Taylor was secretary of the Cactus & Succulent Specialist Group of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources , from 1989 to 1996 its vice president and from 1997 to 1998 its president. In September 2011 he left Kew and became director of the Singapore Botanical Gardens.
