Disqus is an online service that offers a centralized discussion platform for websites . It was founded in May 2007 and operates as Disqus Inc. in San Francisco , whose CEO is Daniel Ha. Disqus enables integration with Gravatar , Facebook , Twitter and other social networks .

history

Disqus was developed as a Y-Combinator startup in the summer of 2007 by Daniel Ha and Jason Yan , both students at the University of California, Davis . The spin-off took place on October 30, 2007.

In 2011, Disqus raised $ 10 million in venture capital from North Bridge Venture Partners and Union Square Venture Partners.

Business model

Disqus operates as a freemium model: the basic function is free of charge, extras can be booked by site operators.

distribution

As of June 2008, the service had over 150,000 registered users and 17,000 communities including blogs and websites; in 2011 the number was 35 million registered users and 750,000 communities.

Among other things, the websites of CNN and Wired Disqus have been integrated. In Germany, Axel Springer Verlag, with its title Welt Online , the online portal of the Westfälischer Anzeiger (newspaper group Ippen), and several online portals of the magazines of the Gruner + Jahr publishing house (e.g. National Geographic , Schöner Wohnen ), the online culture magazine Perlentaucher and the city of Waldbröl's website use the Disqus service, and in Switzerland the Neue Zürcher Zeitung .

technology

The Disqus widget is written in JavaScript and is based on a backend that is mainly written in Python using Django .

privacy

If a user of a website on which Disqus is integrated writes a comment, it will be transferred to Disqus in the USA together with his user data and is therefore subject to data protection law there . If the user has a Disqus account , all of his comments will be accessible on all websites that use Disqus. This triggered discussions about data protection and the possibility of anonymous comments. However, Disqus also enables the administrator of the integrating website to optionally enable the comment function without registering as a "guest". Various options are then available to view the comment beforehand.

Disqus also allows use via a Yahoo account . However, this requires access to the user's contacts, status displays and updates. When using a Facebook profile, significantly more information is shared with other users, which is referred to as "basic information" but includes names, profile photo, gender, networks, user ID and friend lists.

Data breaches

In 2013, the Swedish hacker group “Researchgruppen” used the programming interface (API) of the comment function to gain access to the email addresses of Disqus users. The campaign was carried out in collaboration with the Swedish tabloid Expressen with the aim of revealing the identity of users on Swedish hate speech websites. According to research groups, the identities were collected from 29 million comments, including from many international sites such as CNN , The Daily Telegraph or The Jerusalem Post , which use Disqus for their articles.

On October 6, 2017, Disqus announced a data breach in which 17.5 million user data was stolen from a 2012 database. The data went back to 2007 and contained the usernames, email addresses, registration and last login dates and the hashed passwords of about a third of the users.
