The Pachycereeae are a tribe in the subfamily Cactoideae of the cactus family (Cactaceae).

description

The large, tree-shaped or shrubby growing species of the Pachycereeae form non-segmented, columnar and ribbed trunks .

The flower- forming sections are not differentiated. The flowers appear laterally, often below the tip of the shoot or from the cephalium and open at night or rarely during the day. The small to medium-sized, radially symmetrical or zygomorphic flowers, which vary in shape, are hermaphroditic. The flower cup is scaly or rarely bare and covered with thorny or bristly areoles .

The tearing or non-tearing fruits are fleshy. They contain medium to large seeds . The hilum and micropyle of the seeds are connected or united, there are no appendages.

Systematics and distribution

The tribe Pachycereeae is mainly found in Mexico and in the southwest of the United States , but also in the Caribbean , Central America and South America (to Venezuela ).

The current classification as a tribe of the Cactaceae was made in 1958 by Franz Buxbaum . He distinguished the four subtribes Myrtillocactinae , Pachycereinae , Pterocereinae and Stenocereinae . Arthur C. Gibson and Kevin C. Spencer placed the Subtribus Myrtillocactinae and Pterocereinae in the Subtribus Stenocereinae in 1978 after their investigations .

According to Edward Frederick Anderson (2005) the following genera belong to the tribe:
