Ludwig Georg Karl Pfeiffer , sometimes also Louis Georg Karl Pfeiffer (* July 4, 1805 in Kassel , † October 2, 1877 in Kassel) was a Hessian , German doctor , botanist and malacologist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ Pfeiff. "

Live and act

Ludwig Georg Karl Pfeiffer is the son of the lawyer Burkhard Wilhelm Pfeiffer . He studied medicine from 1821 to 1825 in Göttingen and Marburg . In 1826 he settled in Kassel as a doctor and in 1828 became professor of pathology . During the November uprising in Poland in 1831 he was a medical officer in the insurgent army. His diary entries from this period were published in 2000.

Due to his scientific interests, he gave up his medical practice. In 1837 he published his first work on cacti in which he described the species cultivated in German gardens and their synonyms . Another work on cacti , written together with Christoph Friedrich Otto , followed in 1843 : Illustration and description of blooming cacti . In 1837 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . In 1841, Pfeiffer was introduced by Félix Édouard Guérin-Méneville as member number 226 of the Société cuviérienne .

On October 28, 1838 Pfeiffer set out from Hamburg for Havana together with Johannes Gundlach and Carl Friedrich Eduard Otto , son of Christoph Friedrich Otto , where he arrived on January 5, 1839. In Cuba , where he actually wanted to collect cacti, he then turned more and more to collecting conchylia .

From 1840 to 1843 he traveled to Paris , Hungary , the Carniolan and Carinthian Alps and the areas of Fiume and Trieste . The results of these journeys can be found in Monographia Heliceorum viventium and Symbola ad historiam heliceorum .

Together with Karl Theodor Menke , he was editor of the Zeitschrift für Malakozoologie from 1846 (from 1854 Malakozoologische Blätter ).

His flora of Niederhessen and Münden , published from 1847 onwards, is the first flora of this area.
