Myrtillocactus is a genus of plants from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The botanical name of the genus is derived from the Greek word "myrtillo" for small and myrtle- likeand refers to the fruits thatlook similar tothose of the myrtle .

description

The species of the genus Myrtillocactus grow bushy or tree-like, with more or less upright branches. The ribbed shoots carry areoles from which similar thorns arise.

The small, radial symmetry flowers arise in clusters of up to 9 flowers. They open during the day and sometimes stay open until the night. Your flower cup and the flower tube are somewhat woolly and covered with small scales.

The small, spherical fruits are berry-like and taste sweet. They contain broadly oval, somewhat matt black-brown seeds .

Systematics and distribution

The distribution area of ​​the species of the genus Myrtillocactus extends from Guatemala to the south of central Mexico and the north of northern Mexico and includes Baja California . The genus was first described in 1897 by Michelangelo Console , when he put the Cereus geometrizans, described by Ludwig Georg Karl Pfeiffer in 1837, into an independent genus. The type species of the genus is therefore Cereus geometrizans .
