Stenocereus montanus is a species of plant in the genus Stenocereus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). A Spanish common name is "Pitaya Colorada".

description

Stenocereus montanus grows tree-shaped with a few candelabra-like branched shoots and reaches heights of 6 to 9 meters. A distinct trunk is formed. The initially spread out, later becoming upright shoots have a diameter of 13 to 20 centimeters. There are seven to nine slightly rounded ribs that are not notched. The conspicuous areoles on it are covered with dark brown, felty hair . The nine to ten initially white, later graying thorns are 5 to 15 millimeters long. The lowest of them is up to 3 inches long.

The white to pinkish-white flowers open at night. They are 6 to 8 inches long and 3.5 to 5 inches in diameter. Your bracts are strongly pushed back. The spherical to egg-shaped, green to green-red to purple-colored fruits reach a diameter of 5 to 6 centimeters. They are covered with fine, light yellow thorns. The pulp is red.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Stenocereus montanus is common in the Mexican states of Sonora and Sinaloa in deciduous forests at altitudes of 300 to 1,075 meters. It was first described as Lemaireocereus montanus in 1920 by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose . Franz Buxbaum placed the species in the genus Stenocereus in 1961 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
