Stenocereus zopilotensis is a species of the genus Stenocereus in the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Stenocereus zopilotensis grows tree-like with candelabra-like branched shoots and reaches heights of 4 to 5 meters. A clear trunk of up to 45 centimeters in height and 20 centimeters in diameter is formed. The parallel rising, light green shoots have a diameter of 6 to 11 centimeters and are usually not branched any further. There are seven to eight (rarely up to nine) slightly tuberous ribs that are narrower above the areoles . The one to three white central spines later turn gray and are up to 1 centimeter long. They are subulate and thickened at their base. One of them is up to 4.5 centimeters longer than the others. The seven to nine, strongly needle-shaped, yellowish radial spines later turn gray. They are unequal in length. The longest of them are up to 1.3 inches long.

The whitish green flowers appear at the shoot tips and open at night. They are 6.5 to 7 inches long and 4 to 5 inches in diameter. The egg to spherical fruits reach a diameter of 5 to 6 centimeters. They are covered with fine, up to 1 centimeter long thorns that later fall off.

Distribution and systematics

Stenocereus zopilotensis is distributed in the Mexican state of Guerrero in the Cañon del zopilote in deciduous forests at altitudes of 200 to 750 meters. The first description was in 2004 by Hilda Julieta Arreola-Nava and Teresa Terrazas .
