Stenocereus quevedonis is a species of plant in the genus Stenocereus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). A Spanish common name is "Pitire".

description

Stenocereus quevedonis grows tree-like with branched, upright shoots and reaches heights of up to 6 meters. A distinct trunk is formed. The dark green shoots are 1 to 4 meters long and 10 to 15 centimeters in diameter. There are seven to nine wide blunt, notched ribs that are up to 1.5 centimeters high. The three to seven whitish central spines are protruding to obliquely downward and 1.5 to 3 centimeters long. The middle of them is longer than the rest and reaches a length of up to 5.5 centimeters. The nine to 13 initially whitish radial spines turn gray later and are 1 to 1.5 centimeters long.

The long funnel-shaped, white or yellowish to slightly pink flowers open at night and stay open until the next day. They are up to 9 centimeters long and 3.6 to 5 centimeters in diameter. The flower tube is somewhat bulged in the area of ​​the nectar chamber. The more or less spherical to slightly elongated, green to slightly red tinged fruits reach a diameter of 5 to 6 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Stenocereus quevedonis is distributed in the Mexican state of Michoacán in deciduous forests and bushes at altitudes of 100 to 500 meters. In 2003 the species could not be found at the original site in Sinaloa . It was first described as Lemaireocereus quevedonis in 1928 by Jesús González Ortega . Franz Buxbaum placed the species in the genus Stenocereus in 1961 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
