Stenocereus pruinosus is a species of plant in the genus Stenocereus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). Spanish common names are "Pitaya", "Pitayo" and "Pitayo de Octubre".
description
Stenocereus pruinosus grows tree-like with sparsely to richly branched shoots and reaches heights of 4 to 5 meters. Usually a clear trunk is formed. The blue, dark green shoots have a diameter of 8 to 12 centimeters. There are six (rarely five to eight) wavy ribs . The one to four greyish central spines are 2 to 3 centimeters (rarely up to 5 centimeters) long. The five to nine (rarely up to twelve) radiating radial spines are also grayish and usually shorter than 15 millimeters.
The funnel-shaped, white, up to 9 centimeters long flowers appear near the shoot tips. They open at night and stay open until the next day. The elongated, sometimes almost beaked green to red tinged fruits are 5 to 8 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 5 centimeters. The pulp is red.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Stenocereus pruinosus is distributed in the Mexican states of Chiapas , Guerrero , Oaxaca , Puebla , San Luis Potosí , Tamaulipas and Veracruz at altitudes of 800 to 1,900 m. It was first described as Echinocactus pruinosus in 1837 by Ludwig Georg Karl Pfeiffer . Franz Buxbaum placed the species in the genus Stenocereus in 1961 .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
