Stenocereus eruca is a species of the genus Stenocereus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). Foreign-language common names are "Casa de Ratas", "Cherinole", "Chirinole" and "Creeping Devil Cactus".

description

Stenocereus eruca grows prostrate and creeping with only slightly upward shoot tips. Large mats are often formed. The gray-green, heavily thorny shoots are 1 to 4 meters long and 4 to 8 centimeters in diameter. Often adventitious roots are formed. There are ten to twelve ribs . The four to six grayish, strong central spines are flattened and dagger-like. The ten to 17 radial spines of unequal length are whitish and somewhat round. They reach lengths of 10 to 15 millimeters.

The long tubular to salver-shaped flowers open at night. They are light pink-white to cream-colored and 10 to 12 inches long. The spherical fruits are red, have thorns and reach a diameter of 3 to 4 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Stenocereus eruca is distributed on the Mexican Baja California peninsula in the Magdalena plain at altitudes of up to 20 m. The first description as Cereus eruca was in 1889 by Townshend Stith Brandegee . Arthur Charles Gibson and Karl E. Horak put the species in 1979 in the genus Stenocereus .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
