Stenocereus chrysocarpus is a species of the genus Stenocereus in the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Stenocereus chrysocarpus growing tree shaped with numerous candelabra-like branched stems and reaches stature heights between 5 and 9 meters. A distinct trunk is formed. The 2 to 5 meter long, green shoots are upright, not particularly close together and have a diameter of 10 to 14 centimeters. There are seven, rarely eight, slightly arched and not notched ribs that are 3.5 to 4 centimeters high. The areoles on it are covered with reddish to blackish, felty hairs . The up to two greyish central spines , which can also be missing, are bent and usually shorter than the radial spines. The mostly seven whitish radial spines are stiff, protruding and 11 to 15 millimeters long.

The broad, funnel-shaped, fragrant, white flowers open at night and stay open until the next day. They are up to 10 centimeters long and have a diameter of 8 centimeters. The ellipsoidal, reddish purple-colored fruits are 6 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 4 centimeters. They are covered with up to 70 yellow, bristle-like, up to 2 centimeters long thorns that fall off when ripe. The flesh is scarlet to magenta in color.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Stenocereus chrysocarpus is common in the Mexican states of Michoacán and Guerrero in the catchment area of the Río Balsas in deciduous forests at altitudes of 500 to 700 meters. The first description was in 1972 by Hernándo Sánchez-Mejorada .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
