George E. Pugh

George Ellis Pugh (born November 28, 1822 in Cincinnati , Ohio , † July 19, 1876 ​​there ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party . From 1855 to 1861 he sat for the US state Ohio in the Senate .

biography

Pugh was born in Cincinnati to Anthony Pugh. Its ancestors were Welsh immigrants. He graduated from Miami University Jura . In 1843 he opened a law firm in Cincinnati. He was a soldier in the Mexican-American War . He sat in the Ohio House of Representatives from 1848 to 1850. In 1852 he was appointed Attorney General of Ohio. He held this office until 1854.

In 1855 he was elected to the Senate to succeed Salmon P. Chase . Chase was able to take the seat from him in 1861 and moved back to the Senate. In 1863 and 1864 he lost two elections. He wanted to be lieutenant governor of Ohio, but lost to Charles Anderson . He ran for a seat in the US House of Representatives just as unsuccessfully . He withdrew from politics and practiced as a lawyer again until his death.

George Pugh had three brothers and a sister. In 1840 he married Theresa Chalfant with whom he had three children. He is buried in Spring Grove Cemetery , Cincinnati.
