Jacob Burnet
Jacob Burnet (born February 22, 1770 in Newark , Province of New Jersey , † May 10, 1853 in Cincinnati , Ohio ) was an American politician for the National Republicans from Ohio, a son of William Burnet . His brother David G. Burnet was one of the earliest politicians in the Republic of Texas .
After Jacob Burnet graduated from the College of New Jersey with a law degree in 1791 , he moved to the Northwest Territory of Cincinnati in 1796 to practice law. In 1814 he was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives and served two years. From 1821 to 1828 he worked as an associate judge at the Supreme Court of Ohio .
In 1828 he was elected to the US Senate to occupy the vacated seat of William Henry Harrison . He served a total of three years until 1831, but did not stand for re-election. In 1831 he was appointed by the governments of Kentucky and Virginia to a commission to settle a dispute between the two states over the statute of limitations decided by Kentucky . Burnet then returned to the legal profession and was later president of Cincinnati College and the Medical College of Ohio .
He died in Cincinnati in 1853.
