Howard Morton Metzenbaum

Howard Morton Metzenbaum (* 4 June 1917 in Cleveland , Ohio ; † 12. March 2008 in Aventura , Florida ) was an American politician of the Democrats . He was the US Senator for the state of Ohio in 1974 and from 1976 to 1995 .

Metzenbaum graduated from Ohio State University and then continued his studies at the university's law school . He was inducted into the Ohio Bar in 1941 and practiced in Cleveland. Metzenbaum was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 1943 to 1947 and served as a senator in the Ohio Senate from 1947 to 1951. In 1974 he was appointed Senator by Governor John J. Gilligan to fill the vacant seat of William B. Saxbe . Metzenbaum was thus from January 4, 1974 to December 23 of the same year Senator in the United States Senate . On November 2, 1976, he was elected to the United States Senate. Since his predecessor Robert Taft junior resigned a few days before the end of his regular term of office, Metzenbaum was sworn in as senator earlier than originally planned. Re-elected in 1982 and 1988, he was a member of the Senate from December 29, 1976 to January 3, 1995.
