John Smith (politician, around 1735)
John Smith (born around 1735 in Colony of Virginia , † July 30, 1824 in St. Francisville , Louisiana ) was an American politician of the Democratic Republican Party . From 1803 to 1808 he sat for the state of Ohio in the US Senate .
Life
Little is known of his life. He was born in Virginia around 1735. Who his parents were is unknown. In the 1790s he was a pastor in various Baptist churches in Ohio. He then started delivering military items. From 1799 to 1803 he was a member of the House of Representatives for the Northwest Territory . In 1802 he was a delegate to the Ohio Constituent Assembly. After Ohio was admitted as a state to the United States in 1803, he became one of the state's first two senators in the federal senate. He stayed there until 1808. He then moved to St. Francisville, where he died in 1824.
