Frank Bartlett Willis (born December 28, 1871 at Lewis Center , Delaware County , Ohio , †  March 30, 1928 in Delaware , Ohio) was an American politician and the 47th Governor of Ohio from 1915 to 1917 . He also represented this state in both chambers of Congress .

Early years

Willis attended local schools in his home country. He then studied until 1894 at Ohio Northern University . Between 1894 and 1906 he taught economics and history at this university. After studying law, he also taught this subject between 1906 and 1910.

Political career

Willis was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1901 and 1904 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives . From 1911 to 1915 he represented his state in the US House of Representatives in Washington .

In 1914 Willis was elected the new governor of his state against the Democratic incumbent James M. Cox . He took office on January 11, 1915. As governor, he campaigned for budget savings. In light of the emerging traffic, new road traffic laws have been enacted. The alcohol laws were revised and the National Guard was restructured. In 1916 she was mobilized and sent on behalf of the federal government to the Mexican border , where border disputes had broken out. As early as January 1916, parts of the National Guard were dispatched to East Youngstown to restore calm there after a violent steel workers' strike. In the elections of 1916 Willis was defeated by his predecessor James Cox, who also became his successor as governor.

In 1918, Willis lost again to Cox in the gubernatorial election. From 1921 until his death in March 1928 he was a member of the US Senate . There he was chairman of the committee for the administration of the American territories and islands, which were not part of one of the then 48 states. These included Hawaii , Alaska , the Philippines, and Puerto Rico , among others . In 1928 he applied for nomination as a Republican presidential candidate. But he died in March of this year. Frank Willis was married to Allie Dustin; they had a child together.
