(15949) Rhaeticus is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on January 17, 1998 by the Austrian astronomers Erich Meyer and Erwin Obermair at their Davidschlag observatory ( IAU code 540) near Linz in Austria .

The asteroid was named after the astronomer Georg Joachim Rheticus (1514–1574).
