Erwin Obermair (born August 29, 1946 in Hargelsberg ; † January 15, 2017 in Linz ) was an Austrian amateur astronomer and asteroid discoverer.

In 1978 he and his colleague Erich Meyer set up the private observatory Meyer / Obermair in Davidschlag . There he discovered a total of seven asteroids between 1996 and 1998 together with Meyer. In addition, he was involved in three other asteroid discoveries, which were awarded by the International Astronomical Union to the Davidschlag observatory.

Among the most important observations of Obermair are precise position determinations of the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 , which he was able to obtain in 1993 together with Erich Meyer and Herbert Raab and which contributed significantly to predicting the later impact of this comet on the planet Jupiter .

On April 4, 1997 he was awarded the Silver Merit of the Republic of Austria . The asteroid (9236) Obermair was named after him.

Obermair was a member of the Linz Astronomical Association , and from 1974 until his death he was also the vice chairman of this association, and conducted numerous star tours at the Johannes Kepler observatory in Linz .
