history

The Johannes Kepler Observatory Linz

When the “ Linz Astronomical Community ” was founded in 1947, the construction of an observatory for more economically favorable times was considered. First, however, astronomical observation stations were set up on the tower of the Diesterweg Gymnasium (1959 to 1968) and in the botanical garden of the city of Linz (1969 to 1982). The observatory was finally able to open in 1983, initially as the “ Volkssternwarte Linz”. Initially, a refractor with a 120 mm aperture and 2 m focal length served as an observation instrument , which was soon supplemented by a Cassegrain telescope with a main mirror of 400 mm diameter - on loan from the Vienna University Observatory . To mark the tenth anniversary of the observatory, it was renamed "Johannes Kepler Observatory" in honor of the astronomer Johannes Kepler , who stayed in Linz from 1612 to 1626.

The Johannes Kepler Observatory Linz regularly offers public sky observations, astronomical lectures and courses.

Instruments

50 cm Cassegrain telescope at the Kepler observatory in Linz

Since 2000, the Johannes Kepler Observatory Linz has had a computer-controlled Cassegrain reflector telescope with a 500 mm aperture and 5 m focal length, which is carried by a fork mount according to Rudolf Pressberger . This instrument is complemented by an apochromatic refractor with 130 mm aperture and 1.2 m focal length, which can also be used as an H-alpha telescope for solar observation . In addition to visual observation, celestial objects can also be recorded using a CCD camera or a light-sensitive video camera .

In addition, the Kepler Observatory has had a light meter since 2009 , which continuously measures the brightness of the sky to record light pollution .
