Herbert Raab (born January 24, 1969 in Linz ) is an Austrian computer scientist , amateur astronomer and asteroid discoverer .

Life

Raab studied computer science at the Johannes Kepler University Linz and graduated in 1995 as a graduate engineer . In 2012 he graduated with a Master of Science in the university course Management for Engineers at the LIMAK Austrian Business School , where he also completed the Master of Business Administration in 2013 . Professionally, he works as a software engineer in the field of commercial software.

He joined the Linz Astronomical Association in 1983 , from 1996 to 2017 he was chairman of this association and head of the Johannes Kepler observatory in Linz . From 1990 he developed the popular software Astrometrica , which is used for astrometric and photometric evaluation of recordings of asteroids and comets . His most important observations include precise position measurements of the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 , which he was able to obtain in 1993 together with Erich Meyer and Erwin Obermair and which have made a significant contribution to predicting the subsequent impact of this comet on the planet Jupiter .

On August 10, 1997, he and Erich Meyer discovered the asteroid (13682) Pressberger at the Meyer / Obermair private observatory in Davidschlag . In addition, he was involved in three other asteroid discoveries, which were awarded by the International Astronomical Union to the Davidschlag observatory. On the occasion of the coverage of the star HIP 76293 through the asteroid (1177) Gonnessia discovered on 18 May 2007 Raab that it is in the star around a narrow double star is, the components of which are at a distance of only 0.04 ".

Awards

The asteroid (3184) Raab was named after him in May 1996 at the suggestion of Brian Marsden and Gareth V. Williams . On April 4, 1997 he was awarded the gold medal for services to the Republic of Austria .
