Thomas J. Herbert

Thomas James Herbert (born October 28, 1894 in Cleveland , Ohio , †  October 26, 1974 in Grove City , Ohio) was an American lawyer and politician ( Republican Party ) and from 1947 to 1949 the 56th  governor of the state of Ohio.

Early years

Herbert studied at Adelbert College and until 1915 at Western Reserve University . During the First World War he was with the airmen of the US Army . During one operation he was shot down and seriously injured. After his return he studied law from his sickbed. In 1920 he passed his law exam. In 1921 he was hired as assistant manager in the legal department of the Cleveland city council. Between 1922 and 1923 he was an assistant district attorney in Cuyahoga County .

Political career

Herbert was Assistant Attorney General of Ohio between 1929 and 1933. In this capacity he was entrusted with legal support for the public utilities. In 1936 he unsuccessfully applied for the post of Minister of Justice. Two years later, however, he achieved this goal and was Attorney General of Ohio from 1939 to 1945 . At times, he was also chairman of the National Association of Attorneys General of the United States . In 1944, Herbert ran unsuccessfully for governor.

Two years later he succeeded in defeating incumbent governor Frank J. Lausche and being elected governor. Herbert took up his new office on January 13, 1947. During his two-year term in office, he lowered taxes and advocated the continued supply of war veterans. A sanatorium for tuberculosis patients was also built at that time. An extensive construction program was also launched. Many of the state's roads have been paved and paved.

Another résumé

In 1948 he was defeated by his predecessor Lausche in the gubernatorial elections. He then worked as a lawyer in Cleveland. In 1953 he was selected by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in the suspicious Committee for monitoring activities ( Subversive Activities Control Board appointed). Herbert later became chairman of the committee. He held this office until January 1, 1957. Between 1957 and 1963 he was a judge at the Supreme Court of Ohio . Thomas Herbert died in 1974, two days before his 80th birthday. He was married to Mildred Stevenson, who had one son: John D. Herbert was Ohio Treasury Secretary from 1963 to 1971.
