The university is a member of the Association of American Universities , an association of leading research-intensive North American universities that has existed since 1900.

The university was founded in 1967 from a network of the Case Institute of Technology, founded in 1880, and the Western Reserve University, founded in 1826 .

Sights on campus

The Case Western Reserve University campus, located five miles east of downtown Cleveland , is a major cultural hub for the city. In addition to the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History , the Cleveland Museum of Contemporary Art , the Museum of Local History and Archives of the Western Reserve Historical Society , the Cleveland Orchestra and the Cleveland Play House theater are located here.
