David Vincent Ragone (born May 16, 1930 in New York City ) is an American metallurgist . He was best known for the Ragone diagram named after him .

Life

Ragone studied metallurgy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1951 and a Master of Science in 1952 . In 1953 he graduated with a Ph.D. (Doctor of Science). In the same year he began teaching at the University of Michigan, first as an associate professor and later as a professor  . He specialized in thermodynamics , chemical engineering and metallurgy. While working there, he was named "Outstanding Young Engineer" by the Engineering Society of Detroit in 1957.

From 1962 to 1967 he worked at General Atomics , a subsidiary of the defense company General Dynamics . There he was chairman of the department for materials research . His main research interests were material studies for the development of a gas-cooled nuclear reactor .

Ragone then taught metallurgy again at a research university, this time at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania . After serving briefly as dean of the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College from 1970 to 1972  , he eventually returned to the University of Michigan, where he was appointed dean of the engineering department. From 1980 to 1987, Ragone was President of Case Western Reserve University , a research university in the state of Ohio . In 1988 he moved to MIT, where he taught thermodynamics and physical chemistry .

Since then he has dedicated himself personally to materials research and publishes scientific reports. He is also on the advisory boards of various companies, including the Cabot Corporation and the Miter Corporation . The Ragone diagram for comparing different energy stores was named after him.
