Mai Thi Nguyen-Kim (married Leiendecker ; born August 7, 1987 in Heppenheim ) is a German science journalist , TV presenter , chemist , author , web video producer and since June 2020 a member of the Senate of the Max Planck Society .

Life

Nguyen-Kim, whose parents come from Vietnam , attended the Bergstrasse high school in Hemsbach . After graduating from high school , she studied chemistry from 2006 to 2012 at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). From 2012 she worked as a PhD student at the RWTH Aachen , the Harvard University and the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research and was in 2017 at the University of Potsdam with a thesis on Physical hydrogels based on polyurethane doctorate . Nguyen-Kim is married to Matthias Leiendecker, who has a doctorate in chemistry, and has a daughter born in 2020.

In 2015, Nguyen-Kim started the YouTube channel The Secret Life of Scientists to question stereotypes about (natural) scientists and nerds and to convey scientific topics to a young audience. In addition, in October 2016 their YouTube channel Schönschlau went online, which is produced by funk , a joint service of ARD and ZDF for teenagers and young adults. At times she also hosted the channel on the toilet and instructional videos for the subjects chemistry and mathematics in for radio- produced format musstewissen . Your channel Clever was in 2018 maiLab renamed and had the end of April 2020 nearly 900,000 subscribers. maiLab is produced by Südwestrundfunk for funk.

Nguyen-Kim is a moderator in the WiD project Die Debatte and, along with Harald Lesch and Philip Häusser, belongs to the Terra X Lesch & Co team . Alternating with Ralph Caspers (also with Ranga Yogeshwar until he left in November 2018), she has been moderating the program Quarks since the beginning of May 2018 .

Her book Komisch, alles chemisch! Published in March 2019 . made it onto the Spiegel bestseller list in November 2019 .

At the beginning of April 2020 MaiLab reached more than 4 million views within four days with a video on the corona pandemic and was at times number 1 of the YouTube trends, it is the most successful video on the YouTube channel. On the same subject, she made a daily commentary in April . In mid-April, she analyzed the communication of well-known virologists in another video. This video also got into the YouTube trends and reached almost 2 million views within a week (as of April 27, 2020). Nguyen-Kim has since appeared on various other media formats, including television talk shows. At the end of May 2020, in a conversation with the German Press Agency, she called for more source and media competence and criticized conspiracy theories on the corona pandemic . She also sees deficits in general education in the natural sciences and in academic work. She is also a support activist for Scientists for Future .
