Mixed hack

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mixed Hack is a weekly German-language podcast by comedy writer Tommi Schmitt and comedian Felix Lobrecht .

history

The first episode of Mixed Hack was released on September 27, 2017 via the online music service SoundCloud . The title of the podcast had not yet been determined when the first episode was recorded. In addition to mixed hack , the name half / half was also in the room. Both titles are intended to express that the podcast is a collaboration between the moderators, in which both partners contribute to the character of the podcast through the peculiarities of their biography. The title Mixed Hack was later expanded to include the English meaning of the word " hack" , with lifehacks becoming an essential component of the podcast. These come either from Tommi Schmitt, Felix Lobrecht or the community of Mixed Hack .

After the first episode was published, both moderators were surprised by the positive response. The number of regular listeners rose steadily and made Mixed Hack the most popular German-language podcast at times. The streaming service Spotify has held the exclusive rights to the podcast since September 2019 .

content

Lobrecht begins each episode with a rap quote, some of which has current relevance or builds a bridge to the topics of the podcast. Episode # 74 ICH BRAUCH NE GUN is an exception in that Lena Meyer-Landrut reads out an ironic, disrespectful rap quote about herself by the artist Tarek from KIZ .

The episodes always represent a dialogue between the two artists and, apart from a few regular rubrics, do not follow a fixed pattern. Rather, Schmitt and Lobrecht tell anecdotes from their past and their everyday work. The humor often results from the biographies of the two moderators. While Lobrecht spent his childhood and youth in Berlin-Gropiusstadt , Schmitt grew up as the son of a doctor in East Westphalia . The socialization of the two is often the topic of the podcast and the subject of the jokes.

The only rubric that appears in almost all episodes is five quick questions (to ...). Since April 2020, this section has been continued in a weekly interview format with changing guests. Guests of the first season of this format were Mai Thi Nguyen-Kim , Mats Hummels , the social entrepreneur Simon Böhnlein, Juju , Christian Ulmen and Linda Zervakis .

In the course of the format it has also become anchored that the two share life hacks , alluding to the podcast title , that either come from them or from the community with which they communicate via Twitter and Instagram . Some categories such as the sense of achievement and the fail of the week were later removed from the regular program of an episode and are only treated irregularly.

Running gags

  • Lobrecht says he studied political science in Marburg , which very few people know
  • The last words of the show are awarded to Schmitt by Lobrecht, the actual last word is usually from Lobrecht
  • Schmitt's exclusionary behavior towards a former classmate

  • Lifehacks: Tips for solving or dealing with everyday problems.
  • Overrated Hack: Mention of an object or a life hack that unjustifiably enjoys a good reputation.
  • Underrated Hack: Counterpart to Overrated Hack ; Item or lifehack that deserves a better reputation.

Reach and Influence

Mixed Hack has around 500,000 weekly listeners and is one of the most successful German-language podcasts alongside Fest & Flauschig by Jan Böhmermann and Olli Schulz . On the 2019 annual hit list of the streaming provider Spotify, mixed hack took third place among the most streamed podcasts worldwide. The format took first place throughout Germany.

Some mixed hack campaigns have received a lot of feedback in social networks, such as the ironic hashtag #unsereweiber , with which the two artists express solidarity with the German national women's football team and condemn sexism towards women's sport. The ARD Sportschau took up the action of the podcast and players of the team shared the hashtag. As part of the sports show, the two artists commented on their hashtag campaign.

There are several active fan accounts on the social media platform Instagram , which, for example, collect and upload life hacks from the episodes, create painted episode summaries or upload quotes and enable a follow-up search.

criticism

Janina Lambrich from Puls says that at Mixed Hack , flat gags and serious and current topics are balanced. In addition, the two can “not only be funny, but also take a clear position on more serious issues, such as the consumption of meat by Germans or any extremism”.

Lena Steeg von Stern thinks that the two moderators with their contrasting biographies discuss current issues and "hit a tone that many people miss in the rest of the media landscape".

Toni Lukic von Watson judged that it was a miracle that Tommi Schmitt and Felix Lobrecht found each other. What they have in common, however, is dark humor. In Mixed Hack he sees the “conversation between two guys who intellectually rock themselves up in their theories and squeeze the funny out of every little corner of life”.

Awards

In spring 2020, the German Podcast Prize was the first official podcast award in Germany. Mixed hack received an award in the “Audience Award” category.
